Wearing a skirt or dress to go hiking seems to be one of those things you either totally love or totally hate! That being said, I would recommend if you’re even a little curious about hiking or backpacking in a skirt – just try it!
Hiking skirts have their advantages, especially when in middle of a humid summer, they provide more breathability, flexibility and rarely dig in around the waist like some pants can.
Hiking in a skirt also makes using the bathroom in woods a slightly easier and more accessible process 😉

Although, many hikers choose to wear shorts under their skirts or dress to help prevent chaffing and make sure they don’t flash anybody.
Hiking Skirts and Skorts
I’m sad to say my personal favorite hiking skirt is from Melanzana, a small store in Leadville, CO who at the time of writing this, doesn’t offer online sales. But don’t worry – there are lots of other options out there!
Some places to start looking are REI, backcountry.com or the athletic/athleisure section of Target, Walmart, TJ Maxx or other similar stores.
Hiking Skirts For Outdoor Women
Always check that the skirt is made of quick drying, synthetic material and that you’ll be able to move around freely in it. Here are some of our favorite outdoorsy skirts for hiking and backpacking.
Hiking Skirts With Pockets
Sometimes your girl just needs a pocket! And the vast majority of women’s clothing is seriously lacking in the pocket department. Sometimes there are no pockets at all in attempt to look super sleek and chic (I imagine.) Most of the time the pockets aren’t even large enough to hold a smart phone, let alone anything else. Sometimes companies even mock us by sewing on faux pockets! Forget that ish and find some functional outdoor clothing like these skirts below.
Wearing hiking skorts is a great, care free way to enjoy the outdoors, especially if you’re more worried about possibly flashing other hikers, bikers or paddlers.
Budget Friendly Hiking Skirts
As I mentioned earlier, you may be able to find some great synthetic, outdoorsy skirts in the athletic/athleisure sections of stores like Target, Walmart, TJ Maxx, Ross or similar stores.
Thrift stores, especially in mountain towns may also be a good place to look.
Or you can check skirts and dresses at discount sites like:
Hiking dresses can be super comfortable, you don’t have to worry nearly as much about how they fit around the waist like you do with pants or shorts that might be constantly riding up or sliding down. A dress just hangs there, allows for great breathability and lets you move freely.
Just watch out for how the straps lay and fit compared to where your pack straps lay. That could be uncomfortable if there’s a bump or seem under your pack strap.
Plus Size Hiking Skorts
Unfortunately, not all retailers make these easy to find! Here are some go-to places to check for plus size hiking skirts and synthetic clothes:
Who doesn’t love a puffy winter skirt? Pair with warm leggings for a snowshoe hike or just walking around town.
I hope you find the perfect skirt to outfit your adventures! Like I said in the beginning, if you’ve never worn a skirt hiking or backpacking, don’t knock it til you try it 😉
