Hiking The Appalachian Trail
One of the most cherished Appalachian Trail thru hiker traditions is dubbing each other with trail names. Most of the hikers I met in 2013 only went by their trail names, and no one even knew each other’s real names!
Some people will try to declare their own trail name – but I find that those don’t usually stick and aren’t nearly as fitting as a trail name someone else gives you. And also…. that’s kinda lame!
So, how do you get a trail name?

Every year in the Spring and early Summer, it hits me like a wave; I start to see more and more posts in my news feed from thru hikers, announcing they are heading home.
After all the time planning, the effort put into preparing, and money spent on gear for an attempted thru hike, it can be devastating – emotionally and financially – to quit on the dream of thru hiking the Appalachian Trail.
